Themes and Keynote Speakers 2010Full introduction by Ole Fogh Kirkeby:Courage originates in ”cor”, “heart” in Latin. The Old English form was “mod”, "heart, frame of mind, spirit, courage," from P.Gmc. *motha-, of unknown Proto Indo European origin and hence, not related to Danish “mod”. In Greek it is called “thymos” which also means desire, lust of life, appetite, life-power and will. The metaphor is the lion. Courage is the capacity and virtue of the warrior and common to all societies, as well as a prerogative of aristocratic groups and their legitimatization for position and power. Thus, it is not of nature moral or ethical in any universal sense, but refers to interests of ethnic groups, states, nations, armed groups and corporate collectives. Courage is a means to the conservation of self and the will to power; it is most often an act on behalf of some community. Courage for courage’s sake is a part of this cardinal, Greek virtue, “andreia”, closely related to another of these virtues, temperance, “sophrosyne”. During the reign of Christianity this virtue is absorbed as “fortitude”, one of the cardinal virtues, but focused on one’s own salvation and the honor of God. To courage belong endurance of extreme pain, disdain towards bodily survival and the will to sacrifice oneself. In pre-Christian societies in particular, but still today, the survival in people’s memory as the result of courageous acts plays an important part for individual motivation. Courage makes a man the subject of admiration to both the sexes. After the two great wars, courage becomes more complicated, both as an expression of nihilism and as a quality of passive resistance known from the peace-movement from the 1890thies, from Tolstoy’s programmatic work, from the acts of Gandhi, and from many movements for civil rights. This means that courage becomes subject to a universal ethics and not naturally bound to violence and aggression. Courage then becomes an articulation of humanist virtues like respect, responsibility, kindness, generosity, justice, decency, care and the capacity to act for the sake of a higher cause. It also mirrors the Greek maxims of “epimeleia heautou”, taking care of oneself, and being worthy of the event. This is the condition, which now determines our approach to courage as a virtue of leadership. The leader must be courageous on behalf of the community; he must be the servant of a coming, radical humanist society. Thus, courage becomes multifarious and closely related to ethical fantasy, emotional logistics, utopian imagination and the capacity to find solutions, which make the least harm to the greatest many people without betraying principle and normative value. To leadership courage means to prioritize everybody but oneself. This is in accordance with the original sense of leadership, which was the willingness to suffer and even to die. Denne idé forudsætter, at man på to afgørende områder nægter at følge konventionen. Det gælder det, at adskille teori og praksis, og det at adskille kunst og lederskab. Det kræver altså at man har indset, at teori, der batter, netop er en virkelighedsnær praksis, og at praksis, der virker, i sit væsen er teoretisk. Læs mere |
